I spent an enjoyable afternoon yesterday at the Boise Philharmonic, the first of the season. As usual, the concert opened with the national Anthem. It was followed by a piece written by John Williams for the 1986 commemoration of the Statue of Liberty’s centennial. A marvelous piece, Liberty Fanfare, celebratory of one of the ideals of this country’s foundation, LIBERTY.
During the wonderful music, it dawned on me that our present political climate is anything but celebratory. At this moment in our history, we have little to celebrate, and in fact, our very liberty is at stake because of a very reckless person inhabiting the White House.
And immediately the notion occurred to me that this moment is the ideal moment to celebrate Liberty. That needs to be our focus, not the negative vibes emanating from Washington. This country is bigger than Donald Trump. He is one citizen of many and no more important than any one of the rest of us. The Constitution is bigger than Donald Trump. Our history is bigger and more important than Donald Trump. He will occupy his seat for such a short time in our history, and although he will do damage, none of it is irreversible.
So let a Liberty Fanfare sound loud and clear. Let our focus be on the wonderful, positive people who inhabit this great country and not on the demonic nightmare of any single individual. This country belongs to ALL of us. WE will get through this, and we’ll be stronger for it.
