observation

Old?

It seems appropriate that, having just celebrated/experienced my 80th birthday, I should reflect on life and perhaps make an observation or two to mark this latest milestone. I’m not sure why, though. It’s just another day and only marks the completion of my 80th trip around the sun. I can’t really claim it as a personal accomplishment because I’m just a passenger on this spaceship, and I’ve only managed to stay alive. But I guess that’s something and perhaps worthy of a celebration.

In that light, I think every day is worthy of celebrating.

(A long pause has occurred since I began this post. I’ve seriously asked myself, “WHY?” Why do I want to say what I think? Who cares? An old man’s opinion is just that – “An old man’s opinion.” And then a quote attributed to Burke, I believe, comes to mind – “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” So . . .

I can’t DO a lot, but I can share a thought or two about what is going on in this country. I’ve lived through quite a few presidents, and some have been better than others. But I have to admit I’ve never seen one like our current embodiment of the position. I’ve always visualized, perhaps naively, the role of President as a father-figure, a leader, a wise diplomat capable of giving intelligent counsel while maintaining a compassionate regard for the well-being of ALL the people of the country, a peace-loving gentleman, strong when necessary, but never out of malice or for retribution.

Our current “reigning monarch” displays none of the characteristics I would admire in a President. At most, he is a bully, and like all bullies from the beginning of time, the role is a facade to hide weak insecurities. “Do what I say, or I will beat you up” is the ultimate tactic of someone who is fearful, who has no respect for others, who is afraid they can’t measure up on their own merits, of a small person trying to be big. And as long as fear remains, the bully will get his way.

There, I’ve stated my opinion. It may not be much, but today I can say I DID something besides preparing a yummy pot roast for tonight’s family dinner.
