A leader needs to be adventurous, fearless even. The future is never known and, each step of our present journey brings us face to face with crossroads or forks in the road. A leader, to be effective, must look at every option and make a decision about which direction to move. There is no playbook for making that decision. There is no “right” or “wrong” decision. There is no “good”, “better”, or “best” decision. The leader cannot fear the decision she/he makes. The leader must consciously look, and choose a course of action in that moment, not questioning the “rightness” of the action, but also not blindly “knowing” the rightness of the action. He/she must make a step forward knowing that it will be followed immediately by another step and with each step, an effective leader will know that the decision made in that moment is “right” for the moment, even if in the next moment a different decision must be made. An effective leader knows she/he will be able to deal with whatever comes along, not with arrogance, but with humility. “I can because I must. With the support and backing of all the people, I can fearlessly move forward and be awake to the future as it is revealed.”
