Service – A leader needs to view leadership as a service. He/she is a servant, not a king or a dictator. Personal goals and aspirations are set aside and replaced by the need to address the welfare of the people he/she leads. Goals of power, Fame, and financial reward are set aside by an effective leader. The ego is set aside. An effective leader always thinks of all the people, not just certain groups. “Do no harm” becomes the mantra of an effective leader. Any action that harms any person or persons must not happen. A difficult task at best, but the leader, by example, would also ask those being led to put aside personal aspirations that harm others in any community. The survival of the whole depends on this attitude. Any who seek leadership to further their personal aspirations should be disqualified from service. Ideally, a leader should be one who doesn’t want the job, but if selected, will work tirelessly 24/7 to make sure all the people he/she leads have all their needs met.
